Suman Ghosh’s Puratawn, starring Sharmila Tagore, Rituparna Sengupta, and Indraneil Sengupta, premiered at the MAMI festival on Monday. It was nothing short of a gala, as many celebrities, including Saif Ali Khan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunar Khemu, Saba, Nandita Das, and others, attended the screening.

Suman was evidently pleased. “It became a bit of a starry affair with a lot of paparazzi around,” he said with a smile. “I think this is the first time a regional film’s gala premiere took place at the festival. It was a real proud moment for us,” he said.

The film received positive reviews from the audience. After the show, Soha said, “I loved the film. I got a little emotional. It was really touching. I think amma did a fabulous job. Everybody was so good. The photography was beautiful. The subject is hard to watch. It is hard to watch, to see your mother who is turning 80, playing a character of an elderly woman grappling with things that are happening around her.”

Saif said he could not miss his ‘amma’s’ film. “Bengali is a beautiful language. It was nice to see this film and amma in it. The whole cast is amazing. The film is beautifully shot. It warmed me about relationships, about aging, about parents, and love. I enjoyed it. It is a film where you come out feeling warm. It is not too heavy also,” he said.

Suman is overjoyed with the response he has been receiving. “Sharmila Tagore is out of the world. I am very pleased with the feedback I have been getting,” he told us. Produced by Rituparna’s Bhavna Aaj O Kal, the film may be released in January 2025.
